Canada Day: July 1st
Did you know that Surrey was home to Western Canada’s largest Canada Day celebration?
Each year on July 1st, thousands of locals and visitors alike turn out to celebrate the union of the three separate colonies of Canada, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia into one dominion. This year’s celebration is being headlined by local pop-punk sensation, Hedley, and also includes a dazzling fireworks show and Indigenous showcase.
Where to Eat: Since you’ll be in the Cloverdale neighbourhood for Canada Day, Sea Shanty is a must-try. This famous local “diner” may look unassuming, but it is the most delicious seafood in Surrey. Surrey Fusion Festival: July 22nd & 23rd
This event is known as the “ultimate celebration of music, food, and culture. The Fusion Festival contains a showcase of some great local talent, as well acts from Canada’s unique Francophone culture. This year’s festival will showcase an Indigenous village, complete with dance lessons and wood carvings. The headline music act is Nelly Furtado. Did we mention that it’s free?
Surrey Tree Lighting Festival: November 25th
Surrey’s official city Christmas tree is lit at Surrey City Hall in front of a big crowd of prominent locals and lovable Christmas characters. This free family event has concerts, sleigh rides, and some great food to snack on while you wait for the tree to be lit up.
Where to Eat: Located right off King George Boulevard on your way up to the Tree Lighting Festival (if you’re coming from the rest of Surrey) is Old Surrey Restaurant. This French-themed eatery uses local BC ingredients and has an old-world charm unrivalled in the city. The dishes aren’t too expensive, all things considered, and they have a great selection of famous BC wines.
Tip: Surrey is unique in British Columbia for its Punjabi and Sikh population, making it a great place to eat some delicious and affordable Indian food.
