How Can I Tell if I Should Get My Rooftop Cleaned?

We’ve all gazed up while driving up to our homes and taken a look at our rooftops. We’ve filed the dingy, moss-covered shingles and the black-molded siding to the back of our minds, because really, who cares? As long as we’re protected from the elements and comfortable within our closed confines, our rooftop is doing its job, right?

Contrary to popular belief, rooftop cleaning and maintenance is essential to a long-lasting, healthy home. Not only are the basics of maintenance important, but they’ll save you a boatload of cash down the line.

So how, exactly, can you tell if your rooftop really does need some tender love and care?

Method One: Look for Yourself

Really, it’s that simple. Stop ignoring the organisms that have now made their forever home on your shingles, and get cleaning. These can range from moss, to granules, to mold, to just about anything. If it doesn’t look like a shingle, it’s time to get rid of it —and fast.

If you’re going to undertake this task on your own, it’s best to avoid a power washer. Power washing your shingles can and will strip them of their granules due to the excessive pressure behind the water stream. Instead, opt for a “soft wash” method. This option uses a biodegradable chemical as opposed to completely pressurized water stream to get your shingles shining like new.

Method Two: Look for Water Spots and Gutter Clog

Water spots on the ceiling inside of your house are an early indicator of a roof leak most likely caused by damage or improper care. You should pay close attention to if these water spots grow darker or larger in size, as this is a surefire sign that your roof is to blame. A leak will only get worse as time goes by, so the best course of action is to address the problem immediately. Unless you possess some serious roofing knowledge, severe leaks are better tackled by the professionals.

If you live in a heavily wooded area or in close proximity to several trees, gutter clog can be another tell-tale sign that your roof is in need of some big time cleaning. These clogs only get worse over time and can lead to further damage throughout the roof. If you notice your gutters are occupied by rubbish, it’s best to grab a ladder and start clearing the debris. Of course, if heights have you nervous, it’s best to call a specialist for the job.

Method Three: How Long Has it Been?

As a general rule of thumb, you should have your rooftops cleaned at least once every four years. But really, maintaining a debris-free roof by some gentle cleaning once a year will keep your shingles healthy and happy. A proper roof cleaning, in many cases, will extend your shingle life by up to 20 to 25 years, saving you money and lots of hassles in the process.

Rooftop cleaning might seem like an easy task, but it’s one best done by professionals. If you need some help getting that perfect look for your home’s roof in Surrey, then let Diamond Clean know.

“Just wanted to tell you how impressed my wife and I are with your work. The only way to make these windows any more transparent is to remove them.”

-JJ, Surrey

“I recommend Diamond Clean to anyone, they cleaned our townhouse windows. I’ve never seen anybody more dedicated to their work. Thanks guys.”

“I liked the way they vacuumed the gutters, they did a very tidy job and didn’t leave a mess. I have had bad experiences with previous cleaners leaving a big mess in my yard and leaving it for me to clean up. I will certainly use Diamond Clean again and would highly recommend them.”

“I was so impressed by Mike’s professionalism and courtesy. He is very meticulous with his work. Not only did he do a great job on my windows, he went above and beyond and repaired my soffet.”

“…their friendly service and thorough workmanship went beyond my expectations…”

“We are a four-unit strata in Southeast Vancouver that hired Diamond Clean this spring to hand clean all units’ siding. They called when traffic (from Surrey) was backed up and arrived within 15 minutes of when they said they would. All owners were really happy with the job they did. Finding anyone who hand cleans siding is a huge research project… that fact they even do it says a lot about their expertise (Shell Busey insists that hand washing — as opposed to pressure washing – is the only right way). Most companies I contacted or reviewed did not hand wash siding and tried to convince me that power washing was okay. These guys get siding. I’ve don’t have much else to add… they were professional, friendly, efficient, responsive, and cost effective. Overall a great experience and we’ll be using them again in future, which I think says it all.”
